About

“As the price and demand for electricity greatly increases over the next decade, conservation is the cheapest, cleanest, most renewal energy available today.”
—Project Smart Light Founder, Richard Skorman

Project Smart Light is a new 501(c)(3) non-profit, energy efficiency program for the Pikes Peak Region. Modeled after the very successful Green Light New Orleans, Project Smart Light raises energy efficient light bulbs through donations and sponsorships and trains volunteers to install as many as possible, for free, to willing applicants. Our goal is to change every light bulb for residents in our Region who want to use our service.

How it will work:

Green Light New Orleans has installed over a quarter of a million compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) in two years, averaging about 30 per residence. The very next month, the applicant’s utility bill drops by $10-$25. Each bulb saves the applicant an average of $39 over its life (5 to 8 years) — if you multiply that by 30 bulbs, that’s about $1,200!

In addition, each bulb saves about 787 pounds of CO2 from entering our local atmosphere and 463 kilowatts of electricity that our community doesn’t have to generate in the future. Our pilot phase will be to install 25,000 light bulbs over the next 5 months.

We Need Your Help

To ensure that we can maintain our commitment to the community, we need your support to purchase light bulbs.

Donate

For every dollar you donate, Project Smart Light will replace one incandescent bulb with one CFL bulb. For each CFL you help us install, you are saving a member of the community about $39, 789 pounds of carbon dioxide, and 463 kilowatt hours of electricity. This is perhaps the greatest impact you can have in making our community a cleaner, more sustainable, more affordable place to live.

Volunteering

Everyday we are contacted by excited volunteers ready to help. Green Light New Orleans has trained over 4,000 volunteers to replace incandescent bulbs in nearly 10,000 residences. With a current database of over 300 interested volunteers, we are confident we will reach our goal of involving 500 volunteers in our pilot phase.

The volunteers are a key to the program’s success. Not only do the volunteers learn the benefits of energy efficiency for themselves, they also have a “conservation conversation” with their applicants as they walk around their residence. Volunteers will be trained to look for other “low-hanging” energy and water savings “fruit” to lower demand and utility costs for their applicant.

Volunteers will also provide valuable information on local conservation resources, recycling, rebates and tax advantages to their applicants.

Sponsorship

Because of our current partnership with Colorado Springs Utilities, the El Pomar Foundation, the Downtown Partnership and the City of Fountain, we currently need to raise $1 for each light bulb we install.

Donation Monetary Savings for Community Number of CFLS Installed CO2 reduced (lbs) in Region kWh Savings
$5,000 $195,000 5,000 4 million 2.315 million kWh
$2,500 $97,500 2,500 2 million 1.158 million kWh
$1,000 $39,000 1,000 787,000 463,000 kWh
$500 $19,500 500 393,500 231,500 kWh

Any contribution is welcome. Project Smart Light is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. 100% of your donation is tax deductible.

How We Can Help You

We will let the community, volunteers and applicants know about your support and commitment. Each residence has an average of 2.5 people. We will communicate your support to each volunteer we send out to install light bulbs. Each volunteer will be required to communicate your support to their applicant. If you add neighbors, friends, family members of applicants and volunteers, and the good will and marketing potential is much greater.

Specifically, we can:

  • Leverage your company’s image as a responsible corporate citizen.
  • Combine your sponsorship with your company’s own volunteer programs and organize volunteer days for your company.
  • Promote you as a proud Project Smart Light sponsor on our web site.
  • Put your company in all of our collateral materials given to the volunteers and applicants that you sponsor.
  • Distribute your marketing materials and information to the residences you sponsor.
  • It may be possible focus your sponsorship on certain neighborhoods and zip codes you desire.
  • Print your logo on each light bulb you sponsor for an extra charge of ten cents per bulb (5,000 CFL minimum).
